Lily Rose Fine is a British/Canadian painter. Interested in our human need for meaning, Fine picks apart potent symbols to depict ineffable personal experiences, veiled in enough ambiguity to act as a conduit for other’s self-reflection. Portraits of herself and those close to her are used to explore themes of persona, platonic intimacy, female friendship, and gender expression. She pays close attention to pigment relationships, using layered glazes to create harmonious hue shifts. The warm light, saturated undertones, and flattened, shadowed backdrops allude to a theatrical space where the observed meets the symbolic. Collecting her own personal language of iconography inspired by relics, antique objects, cinema, theatre, and art history, she examines the threshold between reality and spectrality, public and private life, divulgence and secrets.
